This series of works was created as artist-in-residence at Colchester's former Laura Ashley shop, part of the Minories gallery's 2021 Arable Residency programme. Inspired by messages left on the walls by former staff members, I created work considering the significance of retail spaces as places where communities are formed, and the effects of the 'death of the high street.' I utilised found materials from the shop itself, and experimented with randomisation and automation to choose the content of the work, removing myself from the creative process to mimic the way self-checkout machines remove the need for retail workers.
